A House Built to Feed Itself: Introducing RPK Arun Farm

Updated: Sep 16

Between 2030 and 2035, Greater Jakarta will face a convergence of pressures its food system was never designed to absorb: a peri-urban population still growing, farmland converting to housing at pace, and a climate that is making harvest yields less predictable year on year. The question we have been asking ourselves is a narrow and practical one. What would a settlement look like if it were built, from the start, to feed itself through that?

RPK Arun Farm — Rumah Pangan Kota — is our attempt at an answer.

A long lineage of resilient settlements

The idea of designing a community for self-sufficiency is not new. The grain reserves of Goshen in Egypt carried a population through a regional famine. The Basque's Mondragon built collective industry that outlasted the conditions it was founded in. Gaviotas communities in South America have maintained food and energy independence for generations without withdrawing from the economy around them.

What those examples share is not ideology. It is a design principle: put production, skills and livelihood in the same place, at a scale a community can actually run. RPK Arun Farm translates that principle into Indonesian conditions, on land in the Jagorawi corridor, using precision-agriculture technology rather than nostalgia.

Two pillars, one logic

Food security. A farm-to-table community kitchen opens first, because it generates revenue from the first month rather than the fourth year. Precision farming follows upstream — greenhouse horticulture, layer poultry, aquaculture, and a greenhouse producing seedlings, feed, organic fertilizer and biomass energy for the site itself.

Community resiliency. An urban-farming demonstration hub, an MSME and skills center, co-working space and a creative studio. The point is not training for its own sake: it is to make the site's own enterprises staffable from the community around it.

Agritourism, homestay accommodation, and a senior living facility connected to a lifestyle and light-medical ecosystem. This is the layer that carries the model past grant dependency — the reason the site should still be running a decade after any funding cycle ends.

Built on five years, not on a blueprint

RPK Arun Farm is not a first attempt. It consolidates operating experience we already have, in places donors can visit:

  • A community kitchen in East Jakarta serving more than 70,000 sub-dollar meal packages a year, continuously since 2021

  • A refill water network across 12+ locations in five cities, reaching over 15,000 people and supporting 30+ micro-enterprises

  • 70+ MSME entrepreneurs graduated across three cities, 30% women-led, with more than 90% still trading at six-month follow-up

  • 270+ young people trained in leadership, public speaking and digital skills

The hardest number in development work is not how many people you reached. It is how many were still standing six months after you left.

That is the standard we are holding RPK Arun Farm to. Every component is designed to be handed to a local operator and to survive the handover.

What we are looking for

Land acquisition is financed domestically and forms no part of any grant request. What we are seeking partnership on is the technical and capacity layer:

  • Precision-farming infrastructure — greenhouse, irrigation, micro-climate sensing

  • Renewable energy and water systems

  • Training, curriculum and capacity building

  • Monitoring, evaluation and technical advisory

We are equally interested in technical partnership that is not funding at all — research linkages, short courses, and exchange with institutions working on controlled-environment growing and resource-efficient farm systems.

If your organization works in food security, climate adaptation or rural enterprise, we would welcome a conversation.
